Here are the pool previews and schedule for the 11th Annual Super 16 Extravaganza which will be held Oct 4-5th @ Pasadena HS (206 Shaver, Pasadena 77506). For those of you who haven't been to this school, it is very easy to get to, and sits right on the feeder of Hwy 225 just off the intersection of Loop 610 (between I-45 and the Ship Channel). Let's take a look at the pools which comprise this year's field, which happens to be the largest we've ever assembled. There are a total of 24 teams, but the Super 16 title remains relevant because 8 of those teams will have been eliminated by the end of the first day.
Click here to print: SUPER 16 SCHEDULE
POOL A: North Shore, Klein Forest, Cinco Ranch - It will be very exciting to see the defending state champs featuring #1 ranked senior Kerwin Roach 6'4, #26 ranked senior Geren Mills 6'4, and #52 ranked senior AJ Brown 6'5 taking on the trio of Justin Whitfield 6'5, DeAndre Williams 6'7, and Taj Simmons 5'10. Speaking of Simmons (ranked #7 soph) he will get a chance to dance with #5 ranked soph Jay Jay Chandler 6'3 of Cinco Ranch HS. This will be one of those "Put Up or Shut Up" moments. I just hope like heck they attempt to guard each other.
POOL B: Beaumont Central, Madison, The Woodlands - Be sure to check out the senior showdown between a pair of guys who a year ago were the hottest names in the state, E'Torrian Wilridge (previously ranked #1) vs #6 senior Chris Harris 6'10 (Madison). The outcome of this matchup could provide a surge in at least one of their recruitment. Plus, I'm certain #11 junior Cameron Burkett 6'7 (The Woodlands) will be ready and willing to get a piece of #7 junior Nijal Pearson 6'5 (Beaumont Central).
POOL C: Beaumont Ozen, Seven Lakes, Westbury Christian - The area's #1 and #2 ranked point guards will get a chance to prove to you guys what both think they already know. Galen Robinson 6'0 (Westbury Chr) will be arriving from an official visit to Creighton with plenty of time to get it on with New Mexico recruit Jordan Hunter 5'10 (Ozen). This will be the final time these two young men will play against each other on the HS level. Another duel to see will be #4 ranked junior Kameron McGusty 6'5 (Seven Lakes) vs #25 ranked Grant Hazle 6'5 (Westbury Chr)
POOL D: Cy Lakes, Wheatley, C.E. King - A pair of the area's high scoring back courts will be quite fun to witness. Cy Lakes' De'Aaron Fox 6'3 (#1 ranked junior) & #12 ranked senior Nick Garth 5'11 (committed to Lamar) vs Wheatley's Gerald Thomas 5'11 (#28 ranked senior) & #47 ranked senior Kevon Johnson 6'0. Plus, a territorial showdown will provide bragging rights in Northeast Houston when Wheatley takes on C.E. King featuring #5 ranked junior Gilbert Thomas. C.E. King is coming off their first district title in over 50 years. The program is buzzing and they actually want a piece of both of these teams. Be careful what you ask for...
POOL E: Westfield, St Thomas, Victory Prep - Westfield is one of the top seeds in this year's event. They are very deep at each position. However, no one can think it won't be personal when Mongo Cornett 6'7 takes on his former classmates at V-Prep including #1 ranked soph Jarred Vanderbilt 6'8. In that same game, the stage will be set for #26 ranked soph John Dockery 6'2 (V-Prep) to prove he is just as good of a point guard as #10 ranked soph Darrius McNeil 6'1 (Westfield). Speaking of floor generals looking to make a statement, be sure to catch #36 ranked junior Collin Jones 5'10 (St Thomas) vs #42 ranked junior LaJuan Hardy (V-Prep). Meanwhile, the front court duel between #9 ranked junior Jeremy Peck (St Thomas) and #6 ranked Cornett should be a sizzler.
POOL F: Cy Woods, Westside, HCYA - Recent Vanderbilt pledge, Samir Sehic 6'8 (Cy Woods) vs #11 ranked senior DJ Utomi 6'6 (Westside) should be a nice inside/out physical battle. Plus, Westside features one of the most intriguing prospects in the city, Greg Lee 6'7 (#30 ranked junior). You guys should join me front and center when #2 ranked JJ Caldwell (Cy Woods) goes head to head against one of the hottest young point guards in the city, #10 ranked Elijah Lee 5'11 (HCYA). Remember, there is no such thing as a bad game in da big game!
POOL G: ProVision, Houston Christian, Atlanta Johnson Ferry Christian Academy - This marks the first time a team outside Greater Houston has been invited to the Super 16. Former Duke star Roshawn McCloud ('93) is the coach of the Georgia prep school. They feature a pair of players with Texas ties. Jessie Pistokache 6'3 (native of Mission, TX) and Sam Schweitz 6'8 (transferred from Prime Prep). ProVision features recent North Texas pledge, #25 ranked senior JaMichael Brown 6'1, #16 ranked senior Malik Amos 6'2 and #8 ranked junior Denzalle Henderson 6'10. Houston Christian has some fire as well. #30 ranked senior Cameron Durley 6'7 and #23 ranked junior Braden Knopp 6'6 form a potent front court with plenty some serious beef. However, Durley may not be available due to the fact that he currently stars on the football field.
POOL H: Atascocita, Cy Springs, Clear Creek - Atascocita is lightning quick and has won every Fall Ball game by at least 22 points. They feature one of the area's top junior back court trios, #29 ranked Greg Shead 5'11, #35 ranked Carsen Edwards 5'10 and Jerris Harris 6'1. However, there seems to be a problem because Clear Creek is claiming to have the area's top backcourt trio with #10 ranked senior Jared Evans 6'3, #23 ranked senior Darrell Watson 6'3, and #51 ranked senior AJ Sparks 5'9. Meanwhile, Cy Springs returns 4 starters including #19 ranked Emmanuel Olaposkie 6'6 and #26 ranked junior Eric Parrish 6'4. Both have D1 offers on the table.
