2014 PANGOS ALL - SOUTH FROSH / SOPH CAMP "AFTER-THOUGHTS"
I arrived in Dallas just in time for Sunday's (Oct 12th) Top 60 and Top 30 Cream of the Crop games. As usual, this event was possessed the atmosphere of a good ol' Fall Family Reunion. Many summer coaches who hadn't spoke to each other in months, found themselves rooting for the same team, and in some cases - sitting side by side communicating about... basketball stuff. As for the campers, this event served as the last hooray (of the non-scholastic season) for many of the 9th and 10th graders who accepted invites to participate.
The Top 30 Cream of the Crop game featured a collection of the weekend's top thirty performers (as selected by the contingent of media in attendance). The teams played two 25 minute halves, running clock. Naturally, with 15 players subbing in and out every few minutes, it was tough for many of these young men to get into a consistent rhythm. However, the game remained competitive throughout the process. Among the highly anticipated "games" within this game included, PJ Washington vs Isiah Josey and Jacobi Gordon vs RJ Cammack. It was all Washington in the first half, but Josey came alive in the second frame with impacting rebounding and a couple exciting dunks. However, Washington earned Most Outstanding Player honors primarily because his team won the game. Had the White team won, Josey may have very likely received that honor. Gordon and Cammack are a pair of awfully talented ninth graders who represented Houston and Dallas very well. Both should easy garner serious consideration for every single National Top 50 poll out there. Although they had their moments during this particular game, it was Gordon who was much more aggressive while scoring close or away from the rim.
Top 60 game remained suspenseful the entire twenty-five minutes. Once the smoke cleared, the youngest player on the court stole the spotlight away from his elders. Zarek Thomas 5'11 cg 2019 produced a game high 15pts including back to back threes in the second half to lift the White squad to victory. Thomas was one of only 3 sub-high school players who were selected to play in the All Star games. Harrison Stoddart 6'7 f 2017 and Devion Dunbar 6'2 g 2018 led the Black team with 11pts apiece.
