The game was held Saturday, Sept. 9th @ University of St Thomas (Jerabek Center). Here are the RESULTS from Saturday's SHOWDOWN featuring some of the very top high school talent representing Greater Houston and the Dallas / Fort Worth area. These two cities have long rivaled each other, but have not played in such fashion since 1999 - nearly 20 years ago. Bragging rights were definitely at stake. However, the greater goodwill surrounding this game is the fact that these young men stepped up, donated their time to help raise funds for families who suffered residential damage during Hurricane / Tropical Storm Harvey.
Team DFW was coached by Glenn Smith (MetroPlexHoops.com), Darius Coleman and Nicole Player (mother of heralded Kansas freshmen, Billy Preston). Team Houston was coached by Robert Hatter (The Chop Shop 102.5FM), Moochie Norris and Monja Willis (the mother of Houston Rockets star, James Harden).
WE GAVE AWAY CASH ON THE SPOT!
There were 5 families who walked away with a combined 100% of the entire $5,000 purse collected before and during this event. This ensured absolutely no doubt about the direction or recipient of everyone's donations. Plus, every single spectator had access to receive a pair of sneakers or a new clothing item. At the end of the 3rd period, there were 5 separate drawings at random. At least 1 family member OR the person who initially nominated the family via email MUST HAVE BEEN PRESENT to claim the winnings. Otherwise, we repeated the process of drawing another family. This indeed was a wonderful day for many families.
The notable donors included: Eco-Staff ($1500), A Better Bail Bone ($600), John Lucas Enterprises ($500), Hardwood Foundation ($500). Each had a representive present to actual pull the name of the fortunate families. The head coaches, Smith and Hatter collectively drew the final winning name. There wasn't a dry eye in the building during this process.
HOW DID WE KNOW WHICH FAMILIES TO PICK FROM?
Anyone could have sent an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. (with a brief note about the family, along with a contact number). We called and verified every family which was nominated. Those with at least 3 members in the household, including 1 current student (K-12th grade) was eligible, and placed in the drawing box.
Special Thanks to the University of St Thomas for opening their doors to host this event. Enterprise Car Rental provided the van in Dallas. Witherspoon Law Group provided Glen Smith who drove the van. LemonTree Foundation (David Dennis) in conjunction with Babins Cajun Restaurant supplied the post game meal for both teams.
The referees donated their time to officiate at no cost. Rick Godfrey, the PA Announcer charged no fee for his services. Over a dozen volunteers helped sort and distrubute clothing, kept scoreclocks, and scorebook in order.
